The NFL is known for its diversity, with the league hosting two All-Star Games, two Super Bowls, and numerous other events, but some teams don’t exactly have the best track record.
Last year, the San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers, for example, had the most minority players in the NFL in 2016.
A new study by Vox’s Danielle Radford found that the 49ers are one of only five NFL teams to have zero minority players on their roster, while the Panthers were the only other team to have a minority player on its roster in 2018.
In a statement, the 49er team said, “We have invested heavily in diversity initiatives to ensure that all of our players and coaches are welcomed in every community, whether they’re Black, Hispanic, Asian, or any other racial or ethnic background.
We look forward to welcoming our players, coaches, and all of the members of the San Jose 49ers to the NFL this Sunday.”
The Panthers are one team that did not have a black player on their 53-man roster last season.
